In these challenging times, we have a saying - when the market gets tough, get the marketing going! One thing is for sure,
cutting back on marketing will mean fewer rather than more customers. How you undertake that marketing and what means you
use is the difference between spending and spending wisely.
With every pound needing to be justified more closely, it pays to take stock of what you are doing and make sure you are
getting a return. Here's just a few tips to get you thinking:
- If you are advertising, remember that times get tough for advertisers too, with more space to fill from fewer
advertisers. So negotiate lower rates now!
- Remember, an advert on a right hand page, facing or with editorial, is much more likely to be seen. Don't settle for
less when you don't have to
- Third party endorsement of you products and services are worth far more than advertising, so PR that gets people
talking about you is worth more. Ten people talking is worth more than 1,000 silent ones
- Create low cost events to drive footfall and make sure you use leaflets/posters/banners to let customers know
- Even better, use your email database to tell customers about your events and make sure the communication is full of
WIIFM (what's in it for me). The most important word to use is "you" not "we are doing..."
- Promoting your business is even more important in bad times than good - keep the customers flowing
